HOUSTON - A 1-year-old child is recovering from injuries sustained in an auto-pedestrian accident that claimed the life of a man in northwest Houston.

The accident was reported around 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of Ferguson Way near West Montgomery.

Houston Police and witnesses say the 56-year-old man was traveling westbound on West Montgomery with the child on a motorized wheelchair.

When they approached the above intersection, they saw a sewage leak flooding the curb.

In an attempt to avoid the flooding, the man maneuvered his wheelchair onto the moving lane of traffic.

A gray Ford Escape, on that lane, struck the wheelchair, throwing it into the air.

The man was transported to Northwest Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The 1-year-old boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is now recovering at Houston Northwest Medical Center.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a man in his 20s, is not facing any charges at the moment.
